Sleep and sedation dentistry in Brisbane

Some Treatments Are Better Under Sedation

Long appointments. Surgical work. A strong gag reflex. Or simply preferring to be asleep for it. There are plenty of good reasons people choose sedation, and nerves are only one of them.

Brisbane Sedation Dentistry is a sleep and sedation dental practice, Consulting and Operating at Dormir Group Surgical Centre in Chermside. Dental implants, wisdom teeth, full mouth rehabilitation and complex surgical work, often completed in a single visit, with a Medical Anaesthetist looking after you the whole way through.

And if it has been years since your last visit, that’s fine too. Nobody here is going to comment.

Who We Are

Sedation is the standard here, not the exception

Brisbane Sedation Dentistry provides comprehensive dental treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia. Some patients come to us for complex surgical work, some prefer to be asleep for their treatment, and some are returning to dental care after many years. All are equally welcome.

Our aim is straightforward: complete, high-quality dentistry delivered safely in a true surgical environment. One consultation, a clear written treatment plan, then treatment carried out while you’re comfortable, deeply relaxed under Conscious IV Sedation or fully asleep under general anaesthetic.

We operate out of the Dormir Group Surgical Centre in Chermside, a day surgery run to the guidelines and standards of ANZCA, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.

Where You’re Treated

ANZCA guidelines and standards

Dormir Group Surgical Centre, where Dr Niels operates, complies with the guidelines and standards of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, the professional college that sets the standards for anaesthesia care in Australian day surgeries.

Fully Asleep

General anaesthetic

You’re fully asleep for the entire procedure, cared for and continuously monitored by Fully Qualified Medical Anaesthetists from start to finish.

About sleep dentistry

Deeply Relaxed

Conscious IV sedation

Sedative medication is given through a small drip, keeping you calm and drowsy rather than fully asleep. It’s given by a Medical Anaesthetist, and most patients recall very little of their visit.

About IV sedation

Home The Same Day

Theatre and recovery room

Treatment is carried out in a fully equipped operating theatre at Dormir Group Surgical Centre, and you recover under the care of dedicated nurses provided by Dormir Group Surgical Centre before heading home the same day.

What we treat

Treatment here happens under sedation

  • Model of a single dental implant, a custom tooth on a titanium post From $5,500 per tooth

    Dental implants

New teeth that stay put, placed under sedation. A single tooth, several at once, or a bridge across a gap.

    About implants
  • Model of a full arch of new teeth held by implants, known as All-on-X A whole new set of teeth

    All-on-X implants

When most of the teeth in a jaw cannot be saved, a fixed full set replaces them, usually placed in a single visit under sedation.

    About All-on-X
  • Wisdom teeth & difficult extractions

Removed under sedation. All four wisdom teeth in one appointment if needed, and the tricky removals that belong in a surgical setting.

    About wisdom teeth
  • Combined general dentistry

Fillings, crowns and bridges, root canal treatments, extractions, implants and more, planned together and completed in one session under sedation, instead of a string of separate visits.

    How that works
  • Paediatric sleep dentistry

For children aged 2 and over who need more than a chair visit can manage, treatment is completed gently in one sleep, with the same anaesthetic care we give adults.

    About kids’ care
  • Full mouth rehabilitation

A complete, carefully planned rebuild, done in as few visits as we can manage.

    About full mouth care

One appointment covers it for most people. At your consultation we will tell you exactly what yours would look like, in writing, before you decide anything.

How the sedation part works

Two ways to have it done.

Both happen in the day surgery, with an anaesthetist looking after you the whole time. Both end the same way, with someone you trust taking you home. The only real difference is how deep you go.

You do not have to choose. That gets worked out with Dr Niels and the anaesthetist at your consultation, based on your treatment and your health.

Option 1 · Twilight · IV sedation

Drifting, deeply relaxed, remembering almost nothing.

Not fully unconscious, but far away from all of it. Time goes strangely quickly, and most of it never makes it into memory.

  • Day surgery
  • Little or no memory
  • Home the same day

Option 2 · General anaesthetic

Fully asleep, from start to finish.

You go to sleep, and you wake up with it done. In a theatre, with an anaesthetist whose only job is you.

  • Theatre
  • Asleep the whole time
  • Home the same day
About sleep dentistry

What does it feel like?

A small drip in the back of your hand, a quick scratch, over in a moment. For most people it simply feels like getting heavier and deeply relaxed. Someone can sit with you until your sedation starts.

Like anything medical, sedation has risks and side effects. We go through them with you in plain words at your consultation, and nothing goes ahead until you are comfortable.

Who looks after you

Dr Niels Kirsten

Dr Niels Kirsten has practised dentistry since 2015, with implants and oral surgery the focus of his work for most of that time. He holds a Diploma of Implantology from James Cook University and has continued advanced training in oral surgery since.

His career spans the public dental system in Townsville and on Palm Island, private practice in Charters Towers, and practice in Brisbane. Rural dentistry means managing whatever comes through the door, so complex cases and long treatment plans are familiar ground rather than the exception.

He founded Brisbane Sedation Dentistry to bring that work into the right setting: operating out of Dormir Group Surgical Centre, a full day surgery, with a Medical Anaesthetist managing the sedation, so the people who need this treatment most are no longer the ones avoiding it.

  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery, James Cook University, 2015
  • Diploma of Implantology, James Cook University
  • Ongoing training in implantology and oral surgery

What happens on the day

Your day, from arriving to heading home.

Not knowing what happens is most of the fear, so here is the whole day, step by step. Walk through it at your own pace.

Step 1 · Before the day

Everything arrives in writing first.

Your written plan tells you exactly when to stop eating and drinking, what to bring, and what to leave at home. You will have organised someone to take you home, and if any question comes up in between, you can just call us.

Step 2 · Arriving

A quiet arrival, not a waiting room.

You come to the day surgery in the morning, and someone who knows you are coming meets you. The paperwork is mostly already done. There is no sitting in a row of chairs listening to a dental clinic at work.

Step 3 · Settling in

You meet the person who watches over you.

You settle in, change into something comfortable, and meet your anaesthetist, the person whose only job today is you. Ask them anything at all. Someone can stay with you right up until your sedation starts.

Step 4 · Sedation starts

A small drip, and you settle into sedation.

A small drip goes into the back of your hand, a quick scratch and it is done. For most people it simply feels like getting heavier. There is nothing you have to do, and nothing you have to be brave about.

Step 5 · During treatment

The work happens. You are watched the whole time.

While you're sedated, Dr Niels does the agreed treatment, and the anaesthetist watches your breathing, heart rate and oxygen without a break. Long appointments pass easily when you're deeply relaxed.

Step 6 · Coming round

You come round slowly, with it done.

You come round in the recovery room with a nurse nearby, and you take as long as you need. Feeling groggy is normal and it passes. Most people are surprised how gentle this part is.

Step 7 · Heading home

Someone you trust takes you home.

Once you are ready, the person you organised drives you home, with written instructions for the evening, what to eat, and how to take it easy. We check in with you the next day to see how you are going.

Every day surgery day runs to a plan, and the exact times for yours come with your written treatment plan, so there is no guesswork on the morning.

Ways to pay

More than one way to pay for it.

You will always have a fixed written quote, with item numbers, before anything is booked. When it comes to paying, these are the options we work with.

  • SuperCare

For eligible patients, SuperCare manages the application to access superannuation for approved dental treatment, including the paperwork with the ATO.

    Eligibility criteria apply

  • MediPay

Payment plans for dental treatment, often sorted within a day, with funds paid directly to the clinic. You will know the full cost of your treatment before you commit to anything.

Subject to approval · terms apply

  • Health funds & Medicare

Some surgical items attract Medicare or health fund rebates. Your quote includes the item numbers, so you can check exactly what your fund pays before you decide.

    Depends on your cover

Every option has its own terms and approval process, and we will walk you through what applies to you. MediPay is a credit provider. Accessing superannuation early affects your retirement savings, so we recommend independent financial advice before going down that path.

Questions

What people want to know first

Questions people ask before their first visit, answered plainly.

Still wondering about something?

Ask us anything. There are no silly questions here.

That depends on the option. Under twilight sedation most people are deeply relaxed and remember little or nothing afterwards. Under a general anaesthetic you are fully asleep from start to finish. Either way, you do not have to sit through your treatment.

Your treatment happens in a day surgery run to the guidelines and standards of ANZCA, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, with an anaesthetist whose only job is you. Your breathing, heart rate and oxygen are monitored the whole time. Like anything medical, sedation has risks and side effects, and we go through them with you in plain words before anything is decided.

No. Many of the people we see have been away from the dentist for ten or fifteen years, and we chose this work. Nobody will comment on the state of your teeth, and nobody will ask why you waited.

Someone you trust takes you home, and we help you plan that before the day. After twilight sedation or a general anaesthetic you cannot drive until at least the next day, so a lift is part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Usually, yes. Fasting for a set number of hours is a normal part of sedation and anaesthetic care. You get clear written instructions well before the day, exactly what to stop and when, so there is no guesswork on the morning.

Often, yes. Because you're sedated, long appointments are comfortable, and most people have their treatment completed in a single visit. Your consultation tells you exactly what yours would look like, in writing, before you decide.

Tell us everything, it helps us plan. The anaesthetist reviews your health before anything is booked, and most conditions change how we plan your care rather than whether we can help.

After your examination and a CBCT scan, a detailed 3D picture of your jaw, you get a fixed written quote with item numbers, so you can check your health fund rebates before deciding anything. Payment plans are available, and there are no surprises after the quote.
