When It’s Needed

When an extraction is the kindest option

Saving a tooth is always looked at first. But when a tooth is past saving, or holding on to it is causing more trouble than it’s worth, removing it gently under IV sedation or general anaesthetic is often the kindest path forward. Here’s who this page is for.

Teeth past saving

Broken-down, badly decayed or infected teeth that can’t be rescued with a filling or crown. They’re removed carefully, and the area is left clean and ready to heal.

Several teeth at once

Years of trouble cleared in one appointment instead of being drip-fed across months of separate visits. One appointment, one recovery, and a clear plan for what comes next.

The difficult removals

Deep or curved roots, brittle teeth and awkward positions, the ones that belong in a proper surgical setting. That’s exactly why we operate out of Dormir Group Surgical Centre in Chermside.

An extraction doesn’t have to be the end of the story. If you want the gap filled, dental implants or an implant-retained denture can be planned at the same consultation, and sometimes placed in the same appointment.

The Sedation Part

Sedated for all of it, cared for through all of it

Extractions here are done under IV sedation or general anaesthetic at Dormir Group Surgical Centre in Chermside, which we operate out of. The day surgery is run to ANZCA guidelines and standards. There’s nothing to sit through and nothing to watch.

1

Sedated from start to finish

Fully Qualified Medical Anaesthetists monitor you continuously. Most people remember very little of the procedure.

2

Home the same day

A gentle recovery in a dedicated recovery room with nurses beside you, then home with someone you trust and clear written aftercare in hand.

3

What fills the gap

Leave it, or replace it: dental implants and implant-retained dentures are planned at the same consultation, and where your scan allows, placed in the same appointment.

You rest. We handle the rest.

How It Works

Four steps, and the worst tooth in your head is history

1

The Look

Consult and 3D scan

We check what can be saved and tell you straight. Anything that does need to come out goes into one clear plan, with a fixed written quote before you decide anything.

2

The Sedation

Your appointment, slept through

One tooth or several, removed carefully under IV sedation or general anaesthetic at Dormir Group Surgical Centre in Chermside, which we operate out of. You rest in the recovery room and head home the same day.

3

The Quiet Bit

Healing, without homework

Gums settle over the following weeks. You’ll have clear written aftercare, a soft-food head start, and our number if anything feels off.

4

The Choice

Fill the gap, or don’t

If you want the space filled, implants or an implant-retained denture are already mapped out from your scan. If you’re happy as is, that’s the end of it.

Your call, no pressure

What happens on the day

Your day, from arriving to heading home.

Not knowing what happens is most of the fear, so here is the whole day, step by step. Walk through it at your own pace.

Step 1 · Before the day

Everything arrives in writing first.

Your written plan tells you exactly when to stop eating and drinking, what to bring, and what to leave at home. You will have organised someone to take you home, and if any question comes up in between, you can just call us.

Step 2 · Arriving

A quiet arrival, not a waiting room.

You come to the day surgery in the morning, and someone who knows you are coming meets you. The paperwork is mostly already done. There is no sitting in a row of chairs listening to a dental clinic at work.

Step 3 · Settling in

You meet the person who watches over you.

You settle in, change into something comfortable, and meet your anaesthetist, the person whose only job today is you. Ask them anything at all. Someone can stay with you right up until your sedation starts.

Step 4 · Sedation starts

A small drip, and you settle into sedation.

A small drip goes into the back of your hand, a quick scratch and it is done. For most people it simply feels like getting heavier. There is nothing you have to do, and nothing you have to be brave about.

Step 5 · During treatment

The work happens. You are watched the whole time.

While you're sedated, Dr Niels does the agreed treatment, and the anaesthetist watches your breathing, heart rate and oxygen without a break. Long appointments pass easily when you're deeply relaxed.

Step 6 · Coming round

You come round slowly, with it done.

You come round in the recovery room with a nurse nearby, and you take as long as you need. Feeling groggy is normal and it passes. Most people are surprised how gentle this part is.

Step 7 · Heading home

Someone you trust takes you home.

Once you are ready, the person you organised drives you home, with written instructions for the evening, what to eat, and how to take it easy. We check in with you the next day to see how you are going.

Every day surgery day runs to a plan, and the exact times for yours come with your written treatment plan, so there is no guesswork on the morning.

Ways to pay

More than one way to pay for it.

You will always have a fixed written quote, with item numbers, before anything is booked. When it comes to paying, these are the options we work with.

  • SuperCare

For eligible patients, SuperCare manages the application to access superannuation for approved dental treatment, including the paperwork with the ATO.

    Eligibility criteria apply

  • MediPay

Payment plans for dental treatment, often sorted within a day, with funds paid directly to the clinic. You will know the full cost of your treatment before you commit to anything.

Subject to approval · terms apply

  • Health funds & Medicare

Some surgical items attract Medicare or health fund rebates. Your quote includes the item numbers, so you can check exactly what your fund pays before you decide.

    Depends on your cover

Every option has its own terms and approval process, and we will walk you through what applies to you. MediPay is a credit provider. Accessing superannuation early affects your retirement savings, so we recommend independent financial advice before going down that path.

Questions

Extraction questions, answered

The questions people most often ask us about having teeth removed, with no sugar-coating.

Still wondering about something?

Ask us anything. There are no silly questions here.

Yes. Extractions here are done under IV sedation or general anaesthetic at Dormir Group Surgical Centre in Chermside, which we operate out of. Everyone is different, but most people describe the first few days as tender and a bit swollen rather than painful, settling steadily over the week. You'll go home with clear written aftercare and our number if anything feels off.

Yes, and that's one of the main reasons people come to us. Because you're sedated, much more can be done in one visit, so years of trouble can be cleared in a single session with one recovery.

Often, yes. Sometimes an infection needs settling down first, and Dr Niels will make that call at your consultation so you have a clear, safe plan either way.

No. Being nervous is one of the most common reasons people choose us, and nobody here will comment on how long it's been or how your teeth look. You're sedated for the treatment itself, and the consultation is just a look and a conversation.

That's entirely up to you. Some gaps are fine left alone, others are best filled with a dental implant or an implant-retained denture. The options are mapped out from your scan at the same consultation, with no pressure either way.

Most people plan a quiet day or two, then ease back into their routine within a few days. Stitches usually dissolve on their own, and we'll give you guidance for your situation before you leave.
