Getting home

Getting home after your treatment

After sedation or a general anaesthetic most people feel sleepy for a while, and reactions take time to return to normal. So the trip home is planned before you arrive, and it comes down to three simple rules.

  • 01

A trusted adult takes you home

Someone you know collects you from Level 2 when we call them, and travels home with you.

  • 02

    They stay with you

Your support person stays with you for the rest of the day while you rest and doze at home.

  • 03

24 hours off the big jobs

For 24 hours, no driving, alcohol, cooking, using machinery or signing anything important.

Questions

Getting here and getting home, answered

The questions people most often ask about parking, travel and the trip home.

Still wondering about something?

Ask us anything. There are no silly questions here.

Yes. There's no sedation at your consultation, so you can drive, park in the basement car park and head home afterwards as normal. It's only your treatment day that needs a lift.

Yes. The Chermside Health Hub has 180 basement car parks underneath the building, and a lift takes you straight up to our rooms on Level 2.

Only with your trusted adult in the car with you. After sedation you shouldn't travel home on your own, even in a taxi or rideshare, because you may still be drowsy and need someone to help you settle in at home.

Please tell us at your consultation, or give us a call as early as you can. We'll talk it through with you and help you work out a plan before your treatment day. We can't send you home alone after sedation, so it's best to sort this early.

Not for at least 24 hours, and only once you feel completely yourself. Your written aftercare will say what applies to you, as it can depend on your treatment.

Yes. They're welcome to stay while you settle in. Once you've gone in, they can wait nearby or head off, and we'll call them when you're nearly ready to go home.

Most patients head home the same day with their support person. If you have a long trip ahead, you might prefer to stay somewhere nearby the night after your treatment. Let us know where you're coming from and we'll help you plan the day.
