Book a consultationHow sedation helps
You don't have to be brave
Sedation means you don't have to grit your teeth through anything. You simply rest, and let us look after everything else.
- Most people remember very little, or nothing at all
- Your mouth is numbed too, so you're kept comfortable
- Often, years of treatment can be done in one visit
- A Medical Anaesthetist looks after you the whole time
How would you like to feel?
This sounds like
IV sedation
You're deeply relaxed and drowsy, but not unconscious. You can still respond if needed, and most people remember very little afterwards.
About IV sedation →Your first visit
It's just a conversation
Your first appointment is a relaxed chat, not treatment. You can ask anything, take your time, and leave with a clear plan. Nothing more.
- No treatment on the day, just talking
- Bring someone with you if it helps
- Leave with a written plan and quote
- I'm really nervous. Do I have to have anything done at my first visit?
- Not at all. Your first visit is a conversation. Nothing happens unless you're ready.
- Can I bring someone with me?
- Of course. Bring whoever helps you feel calm.
- So what actually happens?
- We chat about what worries you. Then, only if you're comfortable, Dr Niels takes a gentle look and a quick 3D scan.
- And after that?
- You head home with a written plan and quote, and take all the time you need to decide. No pressure, ever.

If you've been putting it off, worrying about what we'll see, or dreading the gagging, you're in very good company. Here's where to start.
10+years
It doesn't matter. We start from today.
If it's been years
No lectures. Just a fresh start.
Many people we see haven't been in a very long time. We'll never comment on how long it's been, and we'll help you catch up in as few visits as possible.

When gagging gets in the way
For many people, sedation makes a strong gag reflex much easier to manage, or takes it out of the picture.

Catch up while you rest
Often, years of put-off treatment can be done in one appointment, so you only have to come in once.

Tip 1 of 8
What happens on the day
Your day, from arriving to heading home.
Not knowing what happens is most of the fear, so here is the whole day, step by step. Walk through it at your own pace.
Step 1 · Before the day
Everything arrives in writing first.
Your written plan tells you exactly when to stop eating and drinking, what to bring, and what to leave at home. You will have organised someone to take you home, and if any question comes up in between, you can just call us.
Step 2 · Arriving
A quiet arrival, not a waiting room.
You come to the day surgery in the morning, and someone who knows you are coming meets you. The paperwork is mostly already done. There is no sitting in a row of chairs listening to a dental clinic at work.
Step 3 · Settling in
You meet the person who watches over you.
You settle in, change into something comfortable, and meet your anaesthetist, the person whose only job today is you. Ask them anything at all. Someone can stay with you right up until your sedation starts.
Step 4 · Sedation starts
A small drip, and you settle into sedation.
A small drip goes into the back of your hand, a quick scratch and it is done. For most people it simply feels like getting heavier. There is nothing you have to do, and nothing you have to be brave about.
Step 5 · During treatment
The work happens. You are watched the whole time.
While you're sedated, Dr Niels does the agreed treatment, and the anaesthetist watches your breathing, heart rate and oxygen without a break. Long appointments pass easily when you're deeply relaxed.
Step 6 · Coming round
You come round slowly, with it done.
You come round in the recovery room with a nurse nearby, and you take as long as you need. Feeling groggy is normal and it passes. Most people are surprised how gentle this part is.
Step 7 · Heading home
Someone you trust takes you home.
Once you are ready, the person you organised drives you home, with written instructions for the evening, what to eat, and how to take it easy. We check in with you the next day to see how you are going.
Every day surgery day runs to a plan, and the exact times for yours come with your written treatment plan, so there is no guesswork on the morning.
Ways to pay
More than one way to pay for it.
You will always have a fixed written quote, with item numbers, before anything is booked. When it comes to paying, these are the options we work with.
-

SuperCare
For eligible patients, SuperCare manages the application to access superannuation for approved dental treatment, including the paperwork with the ATO.
Eligibility criteria apply
-

MediPay
Payment plans for dental treatment, often sorted within a day, with funds paid directly to the clinic. You will know the full cost of your treatment before you commit to anything.
Subject to approval · terms apply
-

Health funds & Medicare
Some surgical items attract Medicare or health fund rebates. Your quote includes the item numbers, so you can check exactly what your fund pays before you decide.
Depends on your cover
Every option has its own terms and approval process, and we will walk you through what applies to you. MediPay is a credit provider. Accessing superannuation early affects your retirement savings, so we recommend independent financial advice before going down that path.

Questions
Questions nervous patients often ask
Whatever you're wondering, someone has asked it before. Here are honest, gentle answers.
Still wondering about something?
Ask us anything, in whatever way feels easiest. There are no silly questions here.
Being very anxious is exactly what we're here for. Sedation was made for people who find the dentist hard, and we'll go at whatever pace feels right for you.
Never. Many people we see haven't been to a dentist in years. We won't comment on how long it's been or what your teeth look like. We simply start from where you are.
Yes. Your first visit is a relaxed conversation, not treatment. You can ask anything, and you'll leave with a written plan and quote to think over in your own time.
That's completely okay, and more common than you might think. Our team will never rush you or make you feel silly. You can take a break whenever you need one before your treatment starts.
Of course. Bring whoever helps you feel calm, both to your consultation and on your treatment day.
Tell us what happened, and we'll plan your care around it. We explain everything first, you choose your option with Dr Niels, and you're looked after by a team whose focus is keeping you calm and comfortable.
With IV sedation or a general anaesthetic, a tiny cannula goes into the back of your hand or arm. Most people say it feels like a quick pinch. You can look away and take all the time you need, and any numbing in your mouth happens once you're already relaxed.
You're numbed as well as sedated, so you're kept comfortable while the work is done. Afterwards, we'll give you clear, simple advice on pain relief.
A Medical Anaesthetist looks after you the whole time, watching your heart, breathing and oxygen, at Dormir Group Surgical Centre in Chermside, which we operate out of. Like any medical procedure, there are some risks, and Dr Niels will talk them through with you at your consultation.
No. If phone calls make you anxious, you can request a consultation online or send us a message instead, whichever feels easier.
