Bone Grafting & Sinus Lifts

Bone grafting and sinus lifts in Brisbane, done under sedation

If you’ve been told there isn’t enough bone for dental implants, that usually isn’t the end of the road. A graft or sinus lift rebuilds the foundation your implants need, and it all happens under sedation at Dormir Group Surgical Centre in Chermside, which we operate out of, often in the same appointment as the implants themselves.

Why It’s Needed

Why you might need a graft before implants

When a tooth has been gone for a while, the jawbone underneath slowly shrinks, because it’s no longer doing any work. Implants need enough solid bone to anchor into. A graft or sinus lift simply rebuilds what time has taken away, so your implants have a proper foundation.

Bone grafting

Rebuilding the jaw

Where the jaw has thinned or shrunk, new bone material is placed exactly where it’s needed. Over the following months your body grows its own bone through it, leaving a solid base for the implant to hold onto. It’s a routine part of implant treatment, and you’re sedated for all of it.

Sinus lift

Making room up top

Your sinuses sit just above the upper back teeth, and when teeth there have been missing a while, there often isn’t enough depth left for an implant. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus lining and adds bone beneath it, creating the room implants need in the upper jaw.

If you’ve been told implants aren’t possible for you, one of these steps is often all that’s missing. Your 3D scan at the consultation shows exactly what’s needed, and you’ll have a fixed quote before anything goes ahead.

How It Works

From scan to implants, one calm step at a time

1

Consult and 3D scan

We look, we scan, and you get a fixed quote. Nothing goes ahead until you’re ready.

2

The sedation appointment

Your graft or sinus lift is done under sedation, often with the implants placed in the same visit.

3

Quiet healing

Where a healing stage is needed, your body grows its own bone through the graft over the following months.

4

Implants on solid ground

With the foundation rebuilt, your implants go in with everything they need to last.

What happens on the day

Your day, from arriving to heading home.

Not knowing what happens is most of the fear, so here is the whole day, step by step. Walk through it at your own pace.

Step 1 · Before the day

Everything arrives in writing first.

Your written plan tells you exactly when to stop eating and drinking, what to bring, and what to leave at home. You will have organised someone to take you home, and if any question comes up in between, you can just call us.

Step 2 · Arriving

A quiet arrival, not a waiting room.

You come to the day surgery in the morning, and someone who knows you are coming meets you. The paperwork is mostly already done. There is no sitting in a row of chairs listening to a dental clinic at work.

Step 3 · Settling in

You meet the person who watches over you.

You settle in, change into something comfortable, and meet your anaesthetist, the person whose only job today is you. Ask them anything at all. Someone can stay with you right up until your sedation starts.

Step 4 · Sedation starts

A small drip, and you settle into sedation.

A small drip goes into the back of your hand, a quick scratch and it is done. For most people it simply feels like getting heavier. There is nothing you have to do, and nothing you have to be brave about.

Step 5 · During treatment

The work happens. You are watched the whole time.

While you're sedated, Dr Niels does the agreed treatment, and the anaesthetist watches your breathing, heart rate and oxygen without a break. Long appointments pass easily when you're deeply relaxed.

Step 6 · Coming round

You come round slowly, with it done.

You come round in the recovery room with a nurse nearby, and you take as long as you need. Feeling groggy is normal and it passes. Most people are surprised how gentle this part is.

Step 7 · Heading home

Someone you trust takes you home.

Once you are ready, the person you organised drives you home, with written instructions for the evening, what to eat, and how to take it easy. We check in with you the next day to see how you are going.

Every day surgery day runs to a plan, and the exact times for yours come with your written treatment plan, so there is no guesswork on the morning.

Ways to pay

More than one way to pay for it.

You will always have a fixed written quote, with item numbers, before anything is booked. When it comes to paying, these are the options we work with.

  • SuperCare

For eligible patients, SuperCare manages the application to access superannuation for approved dental treatment, including the paperwork with the ATO.

    Eligibility criteria apply

  • MediPay

Payment plans for dental treatment, often sorted within a day, with funds paid directly to the clinic. You will know the full cost of your treatment before you commit to anything.

Subject to approval · terms apply

  • Health funds & Medicare

Some surgical items attract Medicare or health fund rebates. Your quote includes the item numbers, so you can check exactly what your fund pays before you decide.

    Depends on your cover

Every option has its own terms and approval process, and we will walk you through what applies to you. MediPay is a credit provider. Accessing superannuation early affects your retirement savings, so we recommend independent financial advice before going down that path.

Questions

Common questions about grafts and sinus lifts

The questions people most often ask us about bone grafts and sinus lifts, answered plainly.

Still wondering about something?

Ask us anything. There are no silly questions here.

You're sedated while it's done, so most people remember very little of the day. Afterwards, most people find it milder than they expected, with some tenderness and swelling that settles over the first week. You'll go home knowing exactly how to keep yourself comfortable.

Most grafts use a safe, well-established bone material that acts as a scaffold. Your body gradually grows its own bone through it, so what ends up supporting your implant is yours. We'll talk you through exactly what we'd use in your case at the consultation.

Often, yes. Where your 3D scan shows there's enough bone to work with, the graft or sinus lift and the implants are placed in the same visit, under IV sedation or general anaesthetic. Where the jaw needs more rebuilding first, we do the graft, let it heal, then place the implants at a second sedation appointment.

When a separate healing stage is needed, it's usually a few months while new bone forms through the graft. There's nothing you need to do during it except get on with life. We'll map out your timeline at the consultation so you know what to expect from day one.

Plan a quiet rest of the day after your sedation appointment, and most people like to take a day or two after that to let the early swelling settle. We'll give you guidance for your situation, so you can plan time off with confidence.

Usually not. In most cases, bone that has shrunk can be rebuilt with a graft or sinus lift, and because it's all done under sedation, the extra step doesn't need to be a frightening one. A consultation and 3D scan will show exactly what's possible for you.
